This new plaza helps restore a “sense of place” to historic Jackson Square and is a vibrant, community gathering space. An old parking lot with deteriorating sidewalks was reinvented with an interactive fountain, curved benches, bicycle racks, pedestrian lighting and new landscaping. We integrated permeable pavement, tree canopy coverage and low-flow drip irrigation as environmentally-friendly features. Plant material includes lavender as Jackson Square is the home to the popular Lavender Festival each June. Funded in part through a TDOT Enhancement Grant, the project adds connectivity, mobility, and accessibility by improving sidewalk infrastructure to meet ADA-accessibility standards.
